Egbe Orun — Your Heavenly Companions and Why They Matter More Than You Think

By Iyanda  ·  AstroDu

Have you ever known someone who is clearly talented, who works harder than most people around them, who does everything right — and yet things never quite come together for them the way they should? Opportunities fall through at the last moment. Relationships that looked promising collapse without explanation. Success arrives and then quietly disappears. Health issues surface just when things are looking up.

In Ifa cosmology, before you look at enemies, before you look at generational curses, before you look at bad decisions — the first question a Babalawo asks is: has this person attended to their Egbe Orun?

What is Egbe Orun?

Egbe Orun translates literally as "heavenly group" or "heavenly companions." Before you came to earth, you existed in Orun — the spiritual realm. In that realm, you belonged to a community of souls. These souls were your companions, your peers, your spiritual family. They celebrated with you before you descended to earth. They made promises with you. Some of them agreed to support your journey here.

When you were born, you crossed from Orun to Aiye — from the spiritual realm to the physical world. But your Egbe Orun remained behind. They are still there, in Orun, watching your journey. And here is the critical thing that Ifa teaches: your Egbe Orun have feelings. They can feel neglected. They can feel forgotten. And when they feel neglected, they have the power to withhold the flow of blessings that was supposed to reach you on earth.

"Before you look outside for the source of your difficulties, look first at the relationships you have neglected — including the ones in Orun."

This is not punishment in the way humans understand punishment. It is more like what happens when you repeatedly cancel plans with a close friend and never explain why. Eventually, that friend stops making effort. The connection weakens. The support that would have flowed naturally begins to dry up.

How Egbe Orun Affects Your Life on Earth

When your Egbe Orun is unsatisfied, the effects are subtle at first and then increasingly obvious. The pattern looks like this: you get close to a breakthrough and something pulls you back. You attract good things but they do not stay. You succeed in some areas but one particular area — often the one most important to you — remains persistently blocked.

The Yoruba say that Egbe takes people. This is an expression that describes someone who keeps falling ill without explanation, who has near-miss accidents, who seems to be called back toward the spiritual realm. In extreme cases, unattended Egbe Orun is associated with a pattern of early death in a family line, with children who do not survive, with people who arrive at the threshold of great things and then die suddenly before they can complete their work.

But these extreme cases are relatively rare. The more common experience is simply a sense of invisible resistance — of working twice as hard as other people for half the result, of doors opening and closing, of a life that should be going better than it is.

Who is Most Affected?

In Ifa, the 11th house of a person's natal chart reveals their Egbe Orun. The sign on the cusp of the 11th house indicates which community of Egbe one belongs to and what they require. Some signs indicate an Egbe that is relatively easy to satisfy. Others indicate an Egbe that requires consistent, dedicated attention.

People with strong 11th house placements — planets sitting in the 11th house, or the 11th house ruler in a prominent position — tend to have a more active and demanding relationship with their Egbe Orun. These people often have a deep sense of belonging to something beyond this world, an inexplicable nostalgia for a place they have never physically been, and a natural affinity for spiritual matters even if they were not raised in a spiritual household.

How to Attend to Your Egbe Orun

The first step is acknowledgement. Simply recognising that your Egbe Orun exists, that they are watching, and that your relationship with them matters — this alone begins to shift something. Neglect is often unconscious. The moment you become conscious of the relationship, the dynamic starts to change.

In traditional Ifa practice, attending to Egbe Orun involves specific rituals performed under the guidance of a Babalawo. The offerings vary based on what Ifa reveals during divination. Sweetness is almost universally welcomed by Egbe — honey, sugar, sweet foods, flowers. White is the colour most associated with Egbe across traditions. Cool water is another consistent element.

A Simple Practice to Begin

If you do not currently have access to a Babalawo and you want to begin acknowledging your Egbe Orun, you can start with something simple. Find a quiet space. Bring something sweet — honey is ideal. Bring cool water. Bring something white. Light a white candle if you have one. Then speak directly to your Egbe Orun. Acknowledge that you have been on earth, busy with the concerns of this life, and that you have not been attending to the relationship. Ask them to remember the promises they made before you descended. Ask for their support in your work and your relationships. Thank them for the ways they have already been supporting you that you may not have noticed.

This is not a substitute for proper Ifa divination. But it is a beginning. And beginning matters.

The Astrological Layer

In the integrated framework that AstroDu uses, your Egbe Orun is identified from the sign on your 11th house cusp in your natal chart. Each sign corresponds to a different community of heavenly companions with specific characteristics and preferences. A person with Aquarius on the 11th house cusp has an Egbe with different qualities than a person with Cancer on the 11th house cusp. Knowing your specific Egbe community helps you understand what kind of relationship they are calling for and what you need to provide.

Egbe Orun and the Modern Nigerian

Many educated, Christian or Muslim Nigerians feel uncomfortable with concepts like Egbe Orun because they seem to conflict with their religious beliefs. But it is worth noting that the concept of a spiritual community that watches over you from another realm is not unique to Ifa. The idea of ancestral support, of heavenly witnesses to your life, of spiritual companionship — these exist in some form across virtually every tradition.

What Ifa offers that is unique is specificity. Not a vague sense of spiritual support but a precise framework for understanding what kind of support you have, what that support requires from you and how to activate it consciously. Whether you approach this through the lens of Ifa, through prayer within your own tradition or through a combination of both — the underlying principle is the same: your life on earth is not entirely a solo journey, and the quality of your invisible relationships affects the quality of your visible life.
