Ika Meji — The Power of Right Speech

By Iyanda  ·  2026-05-14

What Is Ika Meji?

Ika Meji is the eleventh of the 16 principal Odu and the Odu of right conduct — particularly right speech. Its core teaching is that every word you speak carries spiritual weight. What you say about others, about yourself, about your situation — all of it moves through the invisible world and returns to you. In Ifa, words are not just communication. They are ritual acts.

What Ika Meji Rules

Ika governs speech, thought, character, and the law of spiritual consequence — what Ifa calls Ibi and Ire. Ibi is negative energy accumulated through wrong choices. Ire is the flow of blessing that comes from alignment with good character. Ika teaches that these are not random — they are the precise result of what you put into the world.

The Gift of Ika Meji

If Ika is active in your life, your gift is moral intelligence — the instinctive understanding of right and wrong that goes deeper than rules. Ika people also have powerful speech — when they speak with intention and alignment, their words carry unusual weight. Prayers said by Ika people tend to be answered.

The Shadow of Ika Meji

The shadow of Ika is the misuse of the very power it grants. Ika people who use their speech for cursing, for spreading evil about others, for self-denigration — attract Ibi in direct proportion to the power of their words. The same mouth that blesses powerfully can curse powerfully.

Remediation

Physical: For seven days, make a deliberate practice of speaking only what is true, necessary, and kind. Notice what changes in your environment when your words are aligned.

Spiritual: Recite a prayer of blessing over yourself every morning before you speak to anyone. Claim your day. Name what you are calling in. What you say about your own life in the first moments of the day shapes what arrives.

Ancestral: Ask your lineage who carried wisdom in their speech. And who misused the gift. Release the pattern of misuse from your generation.

Biblical/Quranic: Proverbs 18:21 — "The tongue has the power of life and death." The Prophet Muhammad: "Let him who believes in Allah speak good or remain silent."

Orisha Connection

Ika Meji is associated with Obatala — the Orisha of purity, wisdom, and right conduct. When Ika is active, Obatala is asking you to bring your conduct into alignment with your highest self.
