Who Is Obatala?
Obatala is the Orisha of creation and purity — the divine sculptor who fashioned the human body from clay at the instruction of Olodumare. He is the father of all Orishas and the guardian of the Ori — the personal divinity that each human carries in the crown of their head. What Obatala creates is sacred and must be treated as such.
Obatala is associated with the colour white — the light that contains all other colours, the purity that precedes all manifestation. He is the Orisha of the highest moral standard, of patience, of the wisdom that comes from a very long view. He is also the only Orisha with no permanent gender — existing beyond that distinction, encompassing all aspects of human possibility.
What Obatala Governs
Obatala governs creation, purity, wisdom, the human head and brain, bones and the skeletal structure, and the highest moral and ethical standards. He governs the Ori — the personal divine consciousness within each person — and is most directly responsible for the alignment or misalignment of a person with their chosen destiny.
