Oya — The Wind of Transformation

Who Is Oya?

Oya is the Orisha of winds, storms, and radical transformation — the most powerful female warrior among the Orishas and the one who stands at the boundary between life and death. She is Shango's most beloved wife and his fiercest ally in battle. Where he throws lightning, she commands the winds that carry it. Together they are the storm.

Oya governs the marketplace — particularly the markets of transition, change, and the exchange between worlds. She is the Orisha of the dead, not in the sense of death itself but in the sense of the passage — the transition from one state of being to another.

What Oya Governs

Oya governs winds and storms, transformation and radical change, the boundary between life and death, the marketplace of exchange, female warrior energy, ancestor veneration through the Egungun masquerade, and all transition — of season, of phase, of life stage. She also governs the colours of the rainbow — all nine of them — because she contains multitudes.

Oya in Your Life

When Oya is active in your chart or reading, change is coming — and it will not be gentle. Oya does not negotiate with what is ready to end. She sweeps it away so that what needs to live can breathe. When you fight Oya's winds, you exhaust yourself without stopping the transformation. The wisdom is to move with her.

Honouring Oya

Oya's colours are burgundy, wine, purple, and all the colours of the rainbow. Her sacred number is 9. She loves eggplant, red wine, grapes, and purple flowers. Her offerings are best made at cemeteries, marketplaces, or anywhere that change and transition are visible. The most powerful offering to Oya is the courage to let go.

Oya in Astrology

In the AstroDu framework, Oya corresponds to Uranus — the planet of sudden change and liberation — and to Pluto as the force of transformation. She governs the 8th house and the 12th house. She is at home in Scorpio and Aquarius.
