Who Is Shango?
Shango is the Orisha of thunder, lightning, fire, and divine justice. He was the fourth Alaafin of Oyo who became deified after his death — a human so extraordinary in power and character that he crossed the threshold from man to Orisha. His thunder is heard across the sky. His lightning strikes the unjust. His fire purifies what needs purifying.
Shango is the Orisha of kings — of the power, the glory, and the burden of rulership. He is generous to those who are loyal, fierce to those who betray him, and utterly without mercy toward injustice. He does not ask whether you intended to do wrong. He responds to what you actually did.
What Shango Governs
Shango governs thunder and lightning, fire, divine justice, kingship and leadership, male virility, drumming and music, and the dance between power and accountability. He governs all courts of justice and all disputes that require a verdict. He also governs the ego in its royal rather than arrogant expression — the pride that is earned and the authority that is real.
Shango in Your Life
When Shango is active in your chart or reading, something is being judged — in the cosmic sense of: what have you done, and does it deserve to stand? Shango also brings energy, magnetism, and the desire to be seen in your full power. When his energy is flowing, you feel alive, bold, and ready to claim what is rightfully yours.
Honouring Shango
Shango's colours are red and white. His sacred number is 6. He loves red palm oil, bitter kola, plantain, maize, and the beating of the bata drums. His sacred implement is the double-headed axe. The most powerful offering to Shango is justice — the commitment to treat others fairly and use your power with accountability.
Shango in Astrology
In the AstroDu framework, Shango corresponds to the Sun — the planet of identity and authority — and to Mars in its most elevated kingly expression. He governs the 1st house, the 5th house, and the 10th house.
