Who Is Yemoja?
Yemoja — also known as Yemaya in the diaspora — is the great mother of waters and the mother of all Orishas. Her name is a contraction of Yeye Omo Eja: "Mother Whose Children Are in the Fish." She governs the ocean — the vast, deep, powerful body of water that contains all life, from which all life emerged, and to which all rivers eventually return.
Yemoja is the Orisha of maternity in its deepest sense — not just the bearing of children, but the nurturing, protecting, and sustaining of life in all its forms. She is fierce in her love and ferocious in her protection of those she claims as her children.
What Yemoja Governs
Yemoja governs the ocean, all bodies of water, maternity and motherhood, fertility, the unconscious mind, dreams, the emotional depths of the human psyche, and the protection of women and children. She also governs childbirth and everything connected to bringing new life into the world. In Ifa cosmology, Yemoja is connected to the ancestral realm through water — the ocean being the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead.
Yemoja in Your Life
When Yemoja is active in your chart or reading, pay attention to your emotional world — to what is flowing freely and what is blocked. Yemoja's presence often signals a season of deep emotional processing, of confronting what lives in the unconscious depths. She also signals protection — particularly of family and children.
Honouring Yemoja
Yemoja's colours are blue and white. Her sacred number is 7. She loves watermelon, fish, plantain, molasses, and blue flowers. Her offerings are best made at the ocean or any large body of water. The most powerful offering to Yemoja is honest emotional expression — the willingness to feel what you feel without the armour that prevents depth.
Yemoja in Astrology
In the AstroDu framework, Yemoja corresponds to the Moon — the planet of emotion, the unconscious, and the mother. She governs the 4th house and all water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.
